This awesome-looking pedal is essentially a Rangemaster-based treble booster, with some unique tricks of its own. Simple boosting is possible from the Morning Glory V4 side, which adds a transparent push and increased dynamism to your tone without colouring it. -The True North Tweed Drive! The brainchild of Peter Hamstead, the Odyssey - like the Tight Rock - is a drive built by an audio engineer who's primarily an amp designer. Alex Lynham and that cool Becos FX Mini Ziffer! Probably my most-used Tube Screamer to-date - this gives you various additional options to take you well beyond the more typical standard Ibanez and Maxon varieties. Visit our corporate site (opens in new tab). Not only is it a great-sounding, faithful reproduction of the most unobtainium overdrive in the business, it's also housed in a small-form-factor, 1590A-sized enclosure, meaning it doesn't take up much pedalboard real estate at all. It doesn't have quite the same range or output extensions of its sibling Rockaway Archer - operating more within the Mid-gain spectrum. Just a really clever combination of controls and switches. Actually when checking out the Hamstead Odyssey the very first tones I landed on were very OCD-esque - so in may ways the Odyssey became my favourite OCD style - while I really love the Germanium clipping GE version too! There's something about this which is still magical and this pedal is so easy to dial in despite all its options - start with all the switches in down position and all the knobs at noon - and adjust from there - you can't go wrong. These largely cover the left hemisphere of my 12 Degrees of Saturation spectrum - where some can be used as Type Is, but most are Types II-VI. I'm one of the few that talks of Harmonic Overdrives and indeed the lines can be a bit blurry - while there is a general pattern for sort of mid-gainey overdrives which have a wonderfully textured harmonic bloom - listens to that trio and you will soon get the idea. Perhaps the greatest strength of the pedal is its powerful EQ options, which allow you to dial in and refine a drive tone that works, and then make informed adjustments to that if you, say, have to change amps because you're borrowing backline at a gig. In fact I intended originally for these to be an annual event, but the selection process is typically taking up to a year to settle down. My favourite setting on this is a sort of Soft Klone - which is actually something that is nigh impossible to achieve on other pedals of that ilk. The two channels are sufficiently different, the Silicon channel having a tighter, more aggressive feel to the squishier sag of the Valve channel. Read the full Ibanez Tube Screamer Mini review. Less transparent overdrives can still be great though; pedals like the Fulltone OCD have a really great sound that almost sounds like an amp within itself. However, all of them are great options for anyone looking to add something special to their rig. Funnily enough, we even found that it stacks well with, you guessed it, a Tube Screamer. It takes the spirit of Boss's much-loved OD-1 and SD-1, but adds gain, edge and bite to emulate a cooking valve amplifier. I always found it strange that the Pantheon had Bass, Treble and Presence versus Mids as the 3rd Band - but it really works and you can get all those cool in-between tones too. Overdrive can be a great effect to always have on, or it can be used to boost a clean sound for solos, or it can be paired with other pedals there are a seemingly limitless ways they can be used. This is based on the famous Paul Cochrane Timmy overdrive pedal - Paul even helped MXR with the design. The ODR-C also has a variable ODC mini-knob which allows you to De-Compress the output for a more open-pored signal. Readers of this blog will surely know by know that this version of Blues Drive is my absolute favourite of all time. I'm still surprised how relatively rare these types actually are! There is no shortage of great Tweed style overdrives - and indeed I own a few varieties myself - but the True North Tweed Drive is still the most enduring and most natural sounding for me - also at just the right price too! In fact I so like this that I have 3 version of it - the V1.7. For a long time this was 'Danish' Pete Honor's favourite overdrive before Thorpy built him his signature Dane. The Redbeard Angry Rhubarb is something of a marvel of everyday all-rounder overdrive - with its really clever combination of Pre and Post Gain Stages and Single-Band Parametric EQ. I suffer from an embarrassment of riches really where I have just a few too many great overdrives to accommodate them all in the rotation. The Santa Ana overdrive also includes a true bypass/buffer switch and a boost function switch for selecting level or gain boost, in addition to three-band EQ, plus presence and two different voice modes. Do you want one as the basis of your main sound? Controls - Volume, Drive, Tone, Type : OD-1 / TS808 / TS9 / Metal Screamer / TS10 / Exar OD-1 / TS7 / TS808 Keeley Mod / TS9 JHS Mod. Some of these pedals excel at doing one thing very well, while most of these are rather more extended-range and more versatile pedals. Great sounding right through the dials even though the output is somewhat focused as such. The Euphoria was my second Dumble pedal and displaced the Mad Professor Simble from its slot - before the Kondo-Shifuku started its supremacy. The Limited Run Black Edition of Missing Link Audio's Eliminator Overdrive has landed! Richard Blenkinsop I believe this is one of JHS's best-selling pedals of all time - a must have for Tube Screamer fans! 12 years on from its initial release, Fulltone released a fully-fledged V2, which packs an output buffer, which stops the pedal from being influenced by stompboxes before or after it; a Class A configured discrete 2N5457 JFET input section, which raises input impedance and increases dynamics; plus an internal switch to change between Enhanced Bypass and true bypass. Contributions from It's got quite a distinctive sound, which tends to overtake the tone of your amp a little but in that respect, it's really no different from the TS itself or the Klon, both of which have a very recognisable tone. A little patience can generate some stellar tones and this is a really versatile overdrive - but it's not as easy to dial in as some of the others, and for that reason possibly doesn't have as great appreciation as it should have. Guitar World is supported by its audience. Browsing is anonymised until you sign up. I though really like to be able to fine-tine my output in situ - which is why I typically, but not always, go for the more extended-range pedals! The left-hand side sports a germanium diode-based drive, which is similar to some models of the OCD; a Tube Screamer-style drive and a treble boost, while the right side has a more complex two-stage drive, a hard-clipping distortion that's somewhat akin to a ProCo RAT, and the analog JFET boost. Using an overdrive pedal on an already distorted amp will sound very different to using it through a clean amp. A classic modern metal 'djent' tone can be achieved with a TS set up as a boost; that is, gain down, volume way up, tone up, in front of a Peavey 5150 or similar high-gain amp. Thank you for signing up to The Pick. There is something in the edge of the breakup here which is just really special - I talk of my favourite Dumble ODS tones as being slightly fuzz-edged - and this does that brilliantly - still the one to beat as far as I'm concerned! While funnily the first thing I did here was to dial the Deluxe in to sound exactly like the Mini Tumnus - which means reducing some of the Bass and Mids. Controls - Bass, Clipping / Compression : Up is Compressed Asymmetrical / Middle is Least Compressed Symmetrical / Down is Slightly More Compressed Symmetrical, Gain, Volume, Treble. The Freak Fuzz variety adds a further 'Fuzz' mode - meaning you have 4 different playback modes overall! On the Moonshine V2 side, there is tube-like saturation which responds well to your picking and guitars controls. It wont give you massive amounts of gain on tap, but, if youre running it through a clean amp, it does give you a very nice cranked tube amp sound. I'm of course interested in context, quality and versatility in most instances. If you'd rather just get straight to the products, then keep scrolling. Chris loves getting nerdy about everything from guitar and bass gear, to synths, microphones and music production hardware. Still a versatile great sounding drive - even with those slightly dumb backwards EQ controls - which cut the most to the right versus the usual left convention. So I last did one of these back in 2020 - meaning that these Best of Overdrive run-downs seem to be a circa biennial affair. "I'm bummed that I missed this! When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Stacking the two sections together offers more opportunity - both routing options have their relative merits, but we really like the way that the Boost before the Drive ups the saturation quota. Any idea if there " "Hey Steve - you need to contact Dave Friesema " "Thank you for this post, very helpful since as I" "Bought it yesterday, got it for 264 CAD (169). Its got an easy to use layout, with controls for volume, gain and body, which is basically an all-in-one EQ knob. You will receive a verification email shortly. The Keeley Mods beef up the original Blues Driver - make it sound deeper, thicker and more harmonic - while it still cleans up to a most incredible dynamic clean boost - where lots of people use the Blues Driver with Gain backed right down and Volume High - much in the same way they would with a Germanium Fuzz Face being deployed as a clean boost! Thorpy's Hugely Accomplished and Wide-Ranging Scarlet Tunic Preamp is his most Instantly Gratifying Overdrive to-date! When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. But open up the tone, push the volume and you'll find that it's more than capable of delivering modern rock tones. England and Wales company registration number 2008885. Sometimes, you just need the right combination of gear. If you want a quick-dial-in all-rounder overdrive - then the Rhubarb surely has to be one of if not your lead candidate. You kind of need to crank the ODI a little to delivery its full charge of vintage harmonics - but when you do it truly sounds gorgeous. Youre more likely to hear the characteristics of the pedal (if it has some) in the latter case. You know what to expect from a TS, and the Mini will get your mids humping and your single coils beefing up with the best of 'em. Despite overdrive being, fundamentally, a simple concept there is infinite variation possible from a single pedal. HOT CAKE | My new FAVORITE Overdrive Pedal! MusicRadar is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Where the Nordland ODR-C deploys a separate Mids Control and variable Low-Cut in tandem with the Spectrum EQ. These 3 Wamplers are right up there at the top of the tree with all the big hitters, some of them you just need a little patience with on the dial-in - and you need to know what to do with those knobs. Read the full Origin Effects RevivalDrive review. V2 and GE varieties where on any given day any one of those could be my preferred OCD. Also pedals like the DOD250 types / MXR Distortion+ I equate more with distortions - so they are excluded here too, as are most of my Fuzzy-Drive favourites - which I deem entirely its own category. Barber Electronics Gain Changer Overdrive Demo by Bryan Ewald, BD-2ModKeeley/RE-J/Analogman, Is THIS pedal the next KLON? Contributions from There was a problem. We'd say the Timmy is much more versatile as a drive. It's not necessarily the easiest pedal do dial in - and if you're going for a slightly softer overdrive which I so like to do with this - then you need to be patient and diligent on the several knobs in tandem. Quality always wins out in the end - and my favourite all-time Overdrive still remains as that Keeley Freak Fuzz Modded BD-2 which I love for its amazing tones, harmonics and incredible volume clean-up and dynamics. Extra flexibility comes from input and output jacks that will take TRS cables to allow the two circuits to be split, so each can be used in a different loop of a switching system, effectively having two standalone pedals. The original Klon Centaur is right in the middle of the Venn diagram overlap for 'rare' and 'expensive', but luckily there are a number of high-quality clones on the market, of which the Tumnus is one of the better units, in our opinion. This is probably the first overdrive I really got properly to grips with - I just love its crunchy tones in particular - which means I have it mostly set to High Peak playback mode. Some also pair incredibly well with other pedals for example, a Tubescreamer feeding into a Klon style OD is a classic pedal combo. Controls - Bass, Treble, Presence, Volume, Gain Level : Medium Gain, Max Gain, Low Gain, Voice : Hard Clipping / Crunch / Blended Hard & Soft Clipping / Smooth Soft Clipping, Gain. Perhaps the most gratifying thing about the Sunset is that, with a lot of volume boost on tap - despite being a digital pedal - it can actually push a tube amp into saturation just as convincingly as an analog drive or boost. There are so many options out there, and theyre an incredibly useful tool for such a wide range of players. You will have seen all of these on the site before, and some of these have featured really rather quite a lot. All rights reserved. A transparent overdrive pedal essentially means that your core tone shouldnt change much when its engaged; you just get more of it fattened up, probably slightly more compressed, with a little more gain. Some of the newer pedals will be more nebulous and their fortunes may rise and fall, ebb and flow - others will be more permanent. Stacking multiple overdrive pedals is also a very common move, so if you've got two pedals you love the sound of, or two which tonally compliment each other, then it's worth experimenting with them and seeing what they offer up. This is the killer pedal from the 6-Band Series - really taking a Klone into uncharted higher gain territory - with an equally flexible output level. I had been chasing this one since I featured it back in my 2020 rundown as a new introduction. My first favourite Klone pedal was the original Mini Tumnus - which I still love to this day. Controls - Volume, Drive, Clipping : Germanium Hybrid / Silicon, Treble, Mids, Bass. I actually think the Menatone Red Snapper compares really well with this - while both drives are still distinct. For rock and metal players, Mesa Boogie is the gold standard for thick, expressive gain. No doubt a fine sounding drive which sounds best for me at mid-gain levels where more of the texture and harmonics come through. For me it's really an evolved Dumble style drive - while it's not quite as immediate as the Kondo-Shifuku. Readers of the blog will know that I'm a fan of Hybrid Analog + Digital Drive pedals - where the Strymon Riverside and Sunset are pretty much permanent in my pedal-chain, and the Boss OD-200 also puts in regular appearances. I've recently reported how much I like J Rockett's 6-Band Series as I like to call it - where I bought up the trio all at once really. With the RevivalDrive, Origin Effects aimed at delivering the sound and circuit behaviour of a classic amp in a fully variable and controllable format. The Presence dial helps you make it brighter and more open - and I usually prefer it with the +Cream switch applied, while my setup sounds better with the XLF off - obviously that's handy if you have somewhat brighter output Single Coil pickups on your guitar. The volume controls the output and gain, and a ratio knob blends in the overdriven sound with your clean tone. Controls - Drive, Level, ODC (Overdrive De Compress), Spectrum (Low & High EQ), Mid, Lo-Cut. You don't always have to spend a lot of money to get a great overdrive tone. It's just a really cool super versatile all-rounder extended-range Tube Screamer that I really like the sound of. This is another interesting variety of Overdrive - which seems to have something of a Marmite reputation in terms of how some like it where others don't really get on with it. That said when I first dialled it in I pretty much landed on what my exact OCD settings sounded like - so initially the Odyssey displaced that - while it has many more tones onboard than said Fulltone pedal. Weve even added some buying advice further down this article to help you find the best overdrive pedal for you and your needs. Alex Lynham is a gear obsessive who's been collecting and building modern and vintage equipment since he got his first Saturday job. With an ability to mimic a whole range of amps, notably Marshall and Fender models, or provide overdrive thats perfectly tailored to be an extension of your clean amp tone, it will give you a proper cranked vintage amp sound at practical stage and home levels whatever amp you are using. I've recommended this particular variety of pedal to several of my readers, yet not all seem to love it quite as much as I do! They dont usually have as much gain as distortion or fuzz pedals - theyre a little more subtle, adding a bit more grit, sustain and, if dialled in, volume. This is for sure a 'Pristine' pedal which really has the minimal colouring impact on your signal. I has excellent breakup character and sounds great right through the dials - another really smartly engineered and calibrated pedal by my good friend Adrian Thorpe! These types of exercises are incredibly tricky to strike the right balance of generally considered classic overdrive pedals and personal favourites - and they usually evolve over quite an extended period. The Six essentially looks too capture the best of the Blues Breaker, Timmy, and King of Tone - via 6 smart individual voicings with a choice of two different headroom settings and dual EQ controls. Volume, presence and gain are all pretty standard, but with the additional range control you have the ability to boost either high-end frequencies or the entire spectrum. By What we have here ranges from high headroom clean Boost, to beautifully textured Crunch. You can get some very slightly artificial output if you're not properly careful - while a little patience and due diligence - and in the case of the Neuron - properly balancing the mostly secondary controls - Gate, Compression, Tightness and Presence can deliver some really superb analog-style tones. Where nowadays I'm actually more likely though to use the JHS Bonsai, Kuro Custom Audio P.h.A. Find out more about how we test gear here at Guitar World. Others really let the sound of your guitar and amp shine, so if youre happy with your tone as it is, but want a bit of extra attitude, then youll want to look for an overdrive pedal thats more transparent. But with a little patience and due diligence you can dial in some suitably stellar tones on the Melody. Read the full EarthQuaker Devices Palisades review. While it does a pretty decent job in that area as soon as you get used to deploying the really rather sensitive 6-Band Post-Gain EQ. Does it offer the same sort of response and gain structure as a genuine Dumble amp? I was surprised how smooth a tone I could get out of the all digital ones - using their controls carefully in combination. Rare mainly because they're still produced by hand and have a waiting list that runs to several years, the KOT is a fusion of a TS-style drive and a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal, with a variety of clipping and tone options to allow players to customise it to their liking. The volume clean-up on that is so extraordinary that you can go from a dynamic Clean Boost to a full-on throaty roaring Crunch - with wonderful harmonic content and suitably robust low-end! No prizes for guessing which specific genre of player the Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra will appeal to. Of all the pedals I have recommended over the years - the Demon Kondo-Shifuku tends to be the one that finds most favour - every one seems to have been delighted with that. With the right settings, the best overdrive pedals can really get your amp singing. Rockin' Fender's "Tweed" Tone! With the gain up, the volume up and the tone pulled back, the Tube Screamer is pure blues heaven. Even then it's a really unique overdrive - especially in this enhanced limited edition, while the standard edition is pretty stellar too. In any case Joshua is doing really well these days with a near 2-year waiting list for his BlackBoxes - which he is currently only making in standard black colourway! That selection is represented by the original here - the Aphelion - which just has the most magnificent harmonic breakup - presumably though smart application of clipping diodes. ). While the TC Electronic Mojomojo might sit at the more budget end, its still absolutely one of the best overdrive pedals out there. Anticipating seemingly every user need, the Sunset not only has three distortion options with different topologies, but also three boost options and flexible routing that allows for either boost or drive first. The Melody actually initially started off as an unnamed Keith Urban Signature Project based on the Animal overdrive, but latterly morphed into a Mark Lettieri Signature Project based on The Dude, Blue Note and Majestic. It has two independent drives with independent controls, easily accessible via the front panel. I really love my Modded Pettyjohn ODI and actually had the Pettyjohn Edge (Jr Chime) in one of the previous selections - while that dropped out in the final rounds - while it still remains one of my favourite overdrives! Thank you for signing up to Musicradar. In addition to its flatter and more 'open' EQ profile, the Timmy boasts arguably more powerful user controls, with a bass cut and a treble cut control. Controls - Loudness, Frequency (Tone), Drive. One of the newest Overdrives in the collection where I'm still torn between Silicon and Germanium / Hybrid Clipping Modes as to which is my favourite. I " By continuing to browse this site you are agreeing to the use of cookies. More picky tone hounds might prefer something a little more refined, like the Hamstead Odyssey (opens in new tab), or the J Rockett Dude (opens in new tab). The J Rockett Dude prides itself on giving you the famous Dumble amp sound in a box. The New Flagship Cranked Amp in a Box Pedal - The Hotlanta! The EQ has been designed in a clever way too - the bass and treble are cut-only, so youre not adding in frequencies but keeping your tone truer, plus the controls are wired pre- and post-overdrive to help maintain your low end, and smooth out the top. The very originals had only 3 controls, while we have 5 knobs, 3 x 2-way toggle-switches and dual footswitches here. There are still some sweetspots more easily reached on the Euphoria - each of my Dumbles really has its own special sauce, and the Euphoria is no different. While the company may have based its Palisades on the classic TS808, it's built into it a larger array of options than we've so far seen in any overdrive pedal. Although it may not be transparent, it can still be used as a slightly colorful boost in front of a tube amp with the gain down and volume up. The Dude is a D-style overdrive pedal; that is, its trying to replicate the sound of a Dumble amp, which are some of the most expensive and sought-after amps in the world. This is still my favourite daily Dumble - despite some very stiff competition. Controls - Volume, Gain, Mood (Tone), High (High Frequencies / Presence), Headroom : 18V / 9V, Mode / Type : BS Boost, OD1 Smooth Overdrive, OD2 Creamy Overdrive, DS1 Natural Amp Distortion, DS2 Amp Distortion with Bite and OD1+DS2.
